How to use a silicone breast milk collector (and why you would want to)

How would you like to build a little stash of breast milk without the hassle of pumping? It’s actually possible with a silicone breast milk collector, which is a fabulous little breastfeeding tool designed to be attached to one breast whilst feeding from the other. It collects every precious drop of milk during let-down that might otherwise have leaked into your breast pad and gone to waste.

Here we guide you through how to use a breast milk collector, and why one might be your next breastfeeding companion.

What is a silicone breast milk collector?

A milk collector is a small, one-piece device made from soft 100% food-grade silicone and without BPA. They’re leak-proof, portable, silent, and easy to use. Unlike a manual breast pump, they don’t generate any sucking cycles to actively remove milk from the breast. Instead, they simply attach to one breast while you nurse and use the body’s natural response to breastfeeding. The nifty clip-on lanyard minimises spilling and provides peace of mind during use.

Why would I want to use a milk collector?

Using a milk collector means no more milk being lost to your breast pads. Whether you leak a lot during let-down, or it’s just a few drops each feed, that quickly adds up over a day. It’s such a simple way to save that liquid gold and keep a stash available for when you’re away from your baby.

The bonus is that they’re hands-free and completely silent. The stopper and lid means that they’re leak-proof, and because they’re small and light, you can pop it in your bag and take it with you when you’re out and about. Then, just store the milk in a breast milk storage bag or bottle for when you need it.

How to use your silicone breast milk collector?

Before and after each use:

  • Wash your milk collector after each use and when using it for the first time, either by hand or in the dishwasher (top rack only). Remove the lanyard before cleaning.
  • Sanitise your milk collector before and after each use. Either use the boiling method for 3 minutes with plenty of water to cover all parts, or a microwave steriliser.

To use whilst breastfeeding from the other breast:

  1. Attach the lanyard to the collector with the clip and place it around your neck.
  2. Squeeze the centre of the milk collector body.
  3. Place the shield against the breast.
  4. Centre your nipple to form an airtight seal.
  5. Then, let nature do the rest!
  6. To remove, hold the collector and gently squeeze the shield.
  7. Insert the stopper before placing the collector down.
  8. Use the suction base to avoid it tipping over.

To store collected breast milk:

For short-term storage, place the cap on top.

For long term storage, pour it into a storage bottle or bag. Place it in the fridge or freezer.
