Top 10 Baby Names for Boys and Girls  – 2019

It’s Christmas in July for expecting mothers as the top baby names so far this year are revealed.

Thanks to the birth of Britain’s new royal baby, Archie, a name of German origin, meaning ‘truly brave’ has topped the boy list. Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor is the first born son of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. The name Archie has also gained notoriety due to the increasing popular television series Riverdale.

The Britain’s have also topped the girls names list, with Isla coming in at number one. Originating from Scotland, Isla means ‘island’ and is the name of a Scottish river. Isla has also gained popularity due to being one of the main characters, Isla Black Hitchens, in Harry Potter along with the ever popular Australian actress living in Britain, Isla Fisher.

More common names we are used to hearing such as Alice, Jane, Emily and Elizabeth have held their place on the top baby names list however, there are quite a few unique names such as Ada, Amara and Cora to consider.

Ada is of German origin and means ‘noble’. Ada was in the top 100 names in the 1880’s and has made a comeback, ending up number five on the list.

The name Amara which has become hugely popular, is a multicultural name and in the origin of Punjab means ‘immortal’ as well as Mongolian, meaning peaceful. A few names similar to Amara are Aria and Arabella, which have made the top girls names and Aurora which is number three on the list.

Cora is a name best remembered from classical mythology. Daughter of Zeus and heroine of The Last of the Mohicans, is a strong name on its own or can be shortened from Coralie, Corrina or Coraline to give a few examples.

As far as unique names for boys, Milo is huge right now and is second on the list. Meaning ‘soldier or merciful’ in Latin, Milo has gained popularity from the success of the television series This Is Us. Oliver, Theo, Jasper and Finn are similar names and have also made the top boys names list.

Strongly associated with The Da Vinci Code, Silas, a Latin name meaning ‘wood, forest’ is number five on the list and one of the more unique names for a boy.  One of the most unique and surprising names which made the list at number nine is Aarav. Aarav is of Hindi origin and means ‘peaceful’.

Asher, number three on the list, a biblical name meaning ‘fortunate, blessed, happy one’ has become quite popular over time along with the name Atticus, a Latin name meaning ‘from Attica’. The character Atticus Finch, from the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, which made the name popular, was voted the greatest hero of American film by the American Film Institute.

Common names such as Benjamin, Harry, Luke and Luke remain in the top 100 however Latin names including Caius, Amias, Ambrose and Cassian are on the list and growing increasingly popular.
