Skincare routine for baby in 3 easy steps

Gentle, fuss-free, and effective is key when it comes to caring for a baby’s sensitive skin. Their skin is thinner and more fragile so it’s naturally prone to irritation, rashes, and dryness.

That’s why it’s important to not only cleanse their precious skin, but to protect, nourish, soothe, moisturise, and heal it.

Whilst that might sound like there would be more steps involved than in your own skincare routine, it really doesn’t have to be complicated. Here is how to care for your beautiful baby’s skin in three easy steps to keep it healthy and happy.

Skincare routine for baby in 3 easy steps

A skincare routine for baby is as simple as wash, protect, and moisturise. Here is how to do that in more detail, plus the products and ingredients to look for and avoid:

1. Gently wash without irritation

Babies don’t need a bath every day, so only do it when you think your little one requires it. You might think that lots of bubbles in the bath equals clean, but many bubble bath soaps or washes can dry and irritate a baby’s skin and scalp due to the added harsh synthetic detergents (like Sodium Laureth Sulphate).

It doesn’t mean they have to miss out on the fun of bubbles entirely. Just look for a mild wash that contains naturally derived cleansers and skin soothing ingredients.

Gently pat them dry with a soft towel, paying attention to the skin folds. Talcum powders are not recommended.

2. Protect with a barrier cream

After the bath and every nappy change, use a soothing barrier cream to protect the skin around the nappy area from dryness and rashes.

A balm that uses natural Zinc as the base is ideal, plus you’ll want some added nourishing and nut-free (for peace of mind that no nut allergies occur) oils and soothing ingredients to address the cause of the irritation rather than just protecting it.

Let your baby have regular nappy-free time to air-dry the area and help minimise nappy rash.

3. Moisturise, soothe, heal, and calm

Finally, it’s vital that a baby’s skin is nourished and kept hydrated with a good, non-fragranced moisturiser designed to care for their delicate skin. A soothing cream should ideally include natural oils such as Evening Primrose Oil, and be full of healing ingredients including Allantoin and Aloe Vera.

Apply moisturiser at the first signs of dryness. If their skin continues to appear red and irritated, it may be eczema so speak to your doctor about treatment.

Remember to also protect your baby’s skin from the sun. Babies under 6 months should avoid direct sun exposure, and older babies should have sunscreen applied 15-20 minutes before going outdoors when the UV index reaches three or above.
