When I received the NUK Nature Sense Perfect Start Set to trial, I was impressed to see that it came recommended by midwives and paediatricians and that it’s targeted towards breastfed babies.
Having learnt a lot recently about breast anatomy, I was fascinated to see that the NUK teats have tiny openings that mimic the milk ducts in us mothers.
Having had 3 bouts of mastitis and a breast abscess myself, my supply has dropped so I’m now beginning to wean off from breastfeeding and was intrigued as to how my son would adjust to the breastlike, orthodontic shape of the teat.
We have to monitor the amount of milk my son is drinking for growth reasons and he sometimes struggles to meet his ‘daily target’, so I was pleasantly surprised/relieved when he drank the whole serving from the NUK bottle. I put this down to the familiarity of the silicon baglet teat and the anti colic air system, meaning he was able to draw in more milk, without having to take any ‘air breath’ pauses like we found with other brands.
The temperature control visual on the side of the bottle is quite the game changer too, especially when ‘out and about’. The blue colour indicator lets you know that the bottle is safe to drink. If the indicator is white, it is too hot; what a genius idea!
I did encounter a slight problem when making up one of the first bottles; When I added the formula and shook the bottle, the hot milk leaked out from the lid. I realised quickly that the teat, with several openings, was not sitting properly in the lid so the milk was able to escape. Once I noticed this, I didn’t have a problem again and learnt from my mistake. A good point to think about when you first get the set.
The flexible cleaning brush works perfectly with the extra wide bottle neck, and the handle also has a hidden smaller suction brush which makes cleaning the teats a breeze.
The natural, breast-like teats make it easier for your little one to latch on and to draw milk efficiently, maximising the intake at each ‘sitting’.
The temperature indicator reassures you that the milk is not too hot and is safe for your baby to drink.
I would definitely recommend this to pregnant women or new mums, particularly those hoping to breastfeed and who want to avoid the dreaded ‘nipple confusion’. In fact, as a result of trialing this product, I have bought a brand new NUK Nature Sense Perfect Start Set for a friend’s baby shower.
I bought the set from Target for $69.00, which is money well spent in my eyes. The set enables you to use the bottles as the baby grows, with Small, Medium and Large flow teats.
