When you’re a new mum looking for a good breast pump, you’ll get lots of recommendations for Medela breast pumps. Personally, my first breast pump was a Medela Swing (single) many, many years ago, but now that I have a 3 year old and a newborn my lifestyle and needs are much more suited to the amazing Medela Swing Maxi Flex Double Pump.

First look?

As I opened the box I thought to myself “there’s no way this box is going to contain a double breast pump, it’s too small!” To my surprise there was a double breast pump and 4 shields in the box!

The new Medela Swing Maxi Flex pump itself looks like the classic Medela pump and has the same functions as my old pump, so I knew straight away this was going to be an easy pump to use. Also included in the box were 2 150ml bottles with lids and stands to make collection and storage easy.

Ease of use

As I used a Medela Swing Single with my first baby I was easily able to plug the cord in, connect the shields and start pumping. The Medela Swing Maxi Flex double pump is so easy to use and great for busy mums who don’t have time to click through different functions and screens. There are four buttons on the pump; on/off, plus, minus and let-down. Simple!

When paired with the Medela Easy Expression Bustier this pump becomes hands-free and allowed me do play with my two kids or take some time to have a snack without any interruptions.

Useful features

The Medela Swing Maxi Flex Double Pump is compact and perfectly sized to pop into your baby bag for use at home or when you’re out and about. It also take batteries if you prefer to use it while on the go. It also doesn’t lose any power while in battery mode!

The beauty of a double pump is you get double the milk in half the time, which is particularly great for those who have multiples, more than one child or want to spend less time pumping and more precious time with the baby.

The Medela Swing Maxi Flex features a 2-Phase Expression™ technology to mimic a baby’s natural sucking action. This is actually really important to me as it means I can get more milk.

My breasts have significantly increased in size since having my second baby, so it’s important to have a breast shield that shapes around my breast and is comfortable to use. These shields have a soft and natural rim with a 105° opening angle and an oval shape that can be rotated 360°!

Speaking of the new PersonalFit Flex™, it has connectors that provide a closed system for milk overflow protection. Okay, why is this important you ask? When you’re pumping you want to be as comfortable as possible and sometimes that means reclining, which can sometimes lead to milk flowing back and entering the tubing and pump machine. By having this special connector, your pump is going to last a lot longer!

Effectiveness

The Medela Swing Maxi flex is super efficient at getting the job done with minimal fuss. This pump does exactly what it’s meant to and that’s collect milk and fast!

As I touched on, the double pump is great for collecting double milk in half the time, however you really need the Medela Bustier to achieve true effectiveness of the product.

Recommendations

I would recommend to other mothers to ensure they purchase the Medela Bustier when using this double pump, it makes life even more easier!

I suggest reading the quick guide card that comes with the pump as it outlines everything you need to know to get pumping straight away. It’s a fantastic resource for time poor mummas!

I would definitely recommend the Medela Maxi Flex Double Pump to new mums and particularly mums with more than one child as it allows you spend less time pumping and more time playing and interacting with your children.
