Alyssa Milano slams society’s double standards

Breastfeeding advocate and actress Alyssa Milano has slammed society’s double standards when it comes to public breastfeeding.

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, the 42 year old mum of two, best known for her role in Charmed, said the difference between the public reaction to breastfeeding photos on Instagram compared with Miley Cyrus’ recent appearance at the VMAs was “craziness”.

“Everyone’s fine with [Miley’s] nipples being out, but if I post a picture of me breastfeeding it’s craziness,” she said.

“I think people are more comfortable sexualising breasts, than relating them to what they were made for, which is feeding another human.

“It’s crazy. But you know what? I don’t care. I’m going to keep breastfeeding, maybe even until she’s six.”

Milano, who is mum to Milo, 4, and Elizabella, 1, is no stranger to controversy surrounding breastfeeding and is a vocal advocate of public feeding.

“I think that breastfeeding mums feel like what they do needs to be hidden, or not feel like they’re getting the appreciation that comes along with being a breastfeeding mom, and it meant something that someone was being vocal.

“When I post pictures of me breastfeeding Bella, it’s not that I’m trying to be very outspoken about breastfeeding, it’s that it’s a very special moment in my life.

“What [other people] take from that is a whole other thing. Support from not only breastfeeding mums, but mums everywhere, has been really powerful and really overwhelming,” she said.
