After having my second child, I suffered sensitive breasts in the first two weeks after birth and then every time my little one goes through a leap and needs that extra comfort – this equals harder sucking and more frequent breastfeeding. Thankfully, I was given the new Mustela Nursing Comfort balm which creates a good moisturising barrier and helps restore sensitive nipples.
First Look
When I picked up the tube it took my sleep deprived brain a couple of seconds to realise that the reason I had no idea what the front of the product said, was because it was in French. Luckily, just below the French writing in big lettering were the words ‘Nursing Comfort Balm’. Aha, got it!
The tube is small, however it is actually a lot bigger than other brands on the market. As the balm is thick and it looks as though it will last a long time.
Ease of use
The Mustela Nursing Comfort Balm is thick, clear and easy to spread. The instructions on the box don’t outline how much to use each time, but it does say to ‘apply generously’, which is exactly how I applied it after feeding. The balm, once spread onto my nipple, leaves it looking and feeling moisturised. When it was time for the next feed I could still see the balm on my nipple, however there was no transfer onto my maternity bra!
Effectiveness
After using the balm for a week, I can attest that it does exactly what it says it will do, which is to protect, sooth and restore sensitive nipples!
Benefits
Personally, one of the most important benefits for me is that the Mustela Nursing Comfort Balm is gentle on my skin, fragrance-free and has been dermatologically tested. This is closely followed by it being environmentally friendly and that it uses natural ingredients (vegan friendly) including organically certified olive oil and vitamin E. Being natural, I didn’t need to wash it off before feeding my baby and it’s comforting to know Mustela have had the product assessed for safety for mums and bubs.
Recommendations
As I’m a complete convert to this product now I’d love to see it available in a larger tube.
I highly recommend waiting a minute after applying before covering up your nipple to ensure there is no transfer onto your bra and to allow the product to sink into your skin.
I highly recommend the Mustela Nursing Comfort Balm to all mums. It’s not just for mums with newborns, its perfect for all stages of breastfeeding.
