A photo of a university graduate breastfeeding her baby has gone viral after the 24-year-old used it to thank the University of the Sunshine Coast for its support during her studies.

Breastfeeding graduate goes viral

“Just wanted to share a photo from the most recent graduation that I am proud of,” Jacci Sharkey told the university.

“I’m extremely proud that with the support of the uni, during my degree I was able to have two babies and still finish my degree. Thanks USC!”

Since USC shared the image on its Facebook yesterday, it’s received almost 140,000 likes and been shared almost 400 times.

It’s little wonder – studying is an achievement in itself, let alone trying to manage a newborn as well.

While the photo prompted the usual debate about the necessity of breastfeeding photos as well as a small number of crude and crass remarks, the overwhelming majority of comments were positive.

Commenters expressed support both for Jacci in her amazing achievement and the University of the Sunshine Coast for supporting studying mums.

“The reason we salute a breastfeeding student… is that both consume so much energy and focus that to be able to do both is actually a higher achievement than if just studying and working alone,” commented Catherine.

And this from Kristie: “Studying is HARD, studying with kids is HARDER, studying whilst growing a baby, giving birth and breastfeeding is EXTREMELY HARD!!!”

Well done to Jacci and for telling the world via her beautiful graduation photo that yes, it can be done!
